Milligan Bags €60m Portugal Mall

UK Retail Company Milligan has secured its first Portuguese development and signed up an anchor store at the scheme.

Milligan, run by former Jones Lang LaSalle international director John Milligan, teamed up with local devleper, Lisbon based Urban Developers, to enter the portuguese market as revealed by Property Week last may.

Milligan and Urban have secured a retail licence for a €60m (£43.4m) development, to be called Barreiro, 30km south of Lisbon. Auchan-owned Jumbo has been signed as the anchor hypermarket at 376,740 sq ft scheme.

Milligan Retail, which was founded by John Milligan in 2002, and Urban Developers are working with architect Broadway Malyan to design the scheme in the Coina area south of Lisbon.

The joint venture is also in talks to secure a further two retail developments.

Milligan set up a Spanish office in November by teaming up with Denton Developments on the back of Milligan's success with the Maremagnum shopping centre. It worked on improving the Barcelona centre's tenant mix for owners DLJ Real Estate Capital Partners and Sir John Beckwith's Pacific Investments Group before it was sold in July 2006.

Fraser Denton, founder of Denton Developments heads the Spanish office.

Urban was set up last year by Helda Sousa and Luis Gasper, who previously worked as project managers at TCN Portugal, a subsidary of Dutch developer TCN Property Projects, formerly Trammell Crow Nederland.
